Most of us think of a good night’s sleep as something to protect, not something to worry about. So it can feel unsettling to hear that sleeping too much might be worth watching too.
A new study out of UT Health San Antonio’s Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases looked at more than 2,400 older adults and found that people who regularly slept longer than average had higher blood levels of a protein tied to Alzheimer’s disease. The research, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, the journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, drew on decades of data from the Framingham Heart Study, one of the longest-running health studies in the country.
What Did Researchers Find?
Researchers modeled sleep and blood-biomarker data from 2,410 participants, whose average age was around 70. People who regularly slept eight and a half to nine hours a night had higher levels of p-tau181, a form of the tau protein that shows up in blood and is considered a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. The link grew stronger the longer people slept, becoming sharpest for those sleeping past 10 hours a night. Of four brain-related proteins the team measured, only p-tau181 held up once researchers accounted for kidney function, sleep apnea, depression, and genetic risk, suggesting this particular signal may be more specific to Alzheimer’s-related changes.
An Important Caveat
This was a snapshot in time, not a study that followed people for years, so it cannot show that long sleep causes Alzheimer’s, only that the two tend to show up together. “We cannot say that long sleep causes Alzheimer’s,” said Vanessa M. Young, PhD, the study’s lead author and a postdoctoral fellow at the Biggs Institute. Young and her colleagues used a statistical technique called restricted cubic splines, which let them capture a curved, changing relationship between sleep and the biomarker rather than forcing the data into a straight line, a method she says was essential to finding the pattern at all.
Why Might This Be Happening?
Nobody yet knows exactly why longer sleep and this biomarker travel together. One possibility researchers point to is that early changes in the brain quietly disrupt the quality of sleep, even as the amount of time spent in bed goes up. Deep sleep is when the brain clears out waste proteins that build up during the day. If that process starts running less efficiently, the brain may need more hours to get the same job done, and some of what it fails to clear could be exactly the kind of protein this study measured.

This study is a reminder that the relationship between sleep and the brain is more complicated than “more is always better.” Unusual changes in either direction may be worth a second look.
What This Means for You
Pay attention to changes, not just totals. If your normal sleep suddenly stretches longer, that shift may matter more than the number itself.
Mention it at your next checkup. Regularly sleeping nine to 10 hours or more is, in Young’s words, “a useful conversation starter” with your doctor about sleep quality and brain health.
Ask about sleep apnea. It’s common, often undiagnosed, and can affect both sleep duration and long-term brain health, and it’s treatable.
Don’t chase extra sleep as a fix. This research doesn’t suggest sleeping less will lower your risk; it simply flags long sleep as something to monitor, not something to force.
Keep the rest of the picture in view. Sleep is one piece of a much larger, well-established set of habits, including diet, exercise, hearing care, and staying connected, that together support a healthier brain as we age.
The Bottom Line
This study isn’t a new test, and it isn’t a reason to worry. What it offers is a more honest picture of how much we still don’t know about sleep and the aging brain, and a nudge: unusual changes in your sleep, in either direction, are worth mentioning to your doctor rather than brushing off.
Sleep has always been where the body repairs itself. It may turn out to be where some of the earliest, quietest signs of change show up too.
